Security is important, however, for a much wider range of programs and environments than people often realize.
• Crackers cover their tracks by breaking into insecure systems and using them to launch attacks against other systems.
• Crackers regularly install password sniffers on compromised machines and use the intercepted passwords to log in to and compromise other systems, repeating the process ad-infinitum.
